Money Saving Ideas!

Over the last few months, we have seen our basic foods increase in price. Make your money go further and look after your health through the kai you prepare.

  • Think about what you want to eat in the week ahead and make a plan. Check the fridge and cupboards, write a list and stick to it, so you don't buy items you don't need.

  • Find cheaper places to shop by chatting with friends or colleagues. Ōtautahi has lots of fruit and vegetable shops where these items may be cheaper than at the supermarket.

  • Look for plain packaged items such as Pams, Budget and Homebrand. These are not always at eye level on the shelf, so have a good look around.

  • Buy vegetables and fruit that are in season. Not only do they taste better, they will also be cheaper.  Get to know what's in season. If you're not sure what's in season take a look at the 5+ a day site

  • Look at what's on offer in the frozen foods and canned foods aisles. Frozen might be cheaper than fresh. Some vegetables such as fresh corn have a short season, but you can still enjoy canned or frozen corn all year round. It's a great way to increase your variety of veggies and eat a rainbow, even in winter!

  • Drink water. Don't reach for sugary drinks to put in your trolley.  Change to water to save money and look after your health.
